Christ Authority Over All

Have you ever tried to hold on to something and ended up losing it?

Maybe for you it has been money, relationships, or time.

For me, it’s time. I have always tried to hold on to it, not surprisingly, I have never succeeded. There are 24 hours in a day, I sleep for 7. . I drive for 2, work for 8,, then add in eating, homework, chores, and whatever else is on my agenda for the day. I always wish I had more time! Have you ever felt that way?

In verse 17 Paul writes:

“He (Jesus) is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Col 1:17).

In a very selfish way, I tend to structure the things in my life around time. In this verse we see that Jesus is before all things. Before creation and even before time itself. My own time and my own life is held together by Him. I often foolishly think I live my life as if I am in control even though I know that I am not the one holding my life or the universe together, rather it is God .

When we think of the human mind, we understand that everything we do is controlled by it.. While I sit and write , my mind takes on an idea, creates a thought, and then types it to my keyboard. Our head is the control center of our body.

Imagine you wanted to walk but your legs wouldn’t move; how frustrating would that be? What if Christ is trying to use us, but we aren’t willing to let him?

In verse 18 Paul writes

“Jesus is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy” (Col 1:18).

If Jesus is the head of the Church and we are the body; we must ask ourselves if we are allowing Christ to control us?

The verse ends with “that in everything he might have the supremacy” Supremacy basically means authority, and if we look at the verse we can see that Jesus has control and authority over all; our resources, our relationships, our time. The sooner we realize this, the better life will be.

Do you live your life as if you are in control of everything?

Do you live with an understanding that Jesus is in control of everything?

What does your life look like when you are in control?

What do you think your life would look like if you lived knowing Christ is in control ?

  • As you begin your day, ask yourself whether or not you are living like Jesus is in control of your heart?

  • Ask God that you would be able to do all things today with a mindset that Jesus has authority over it.

  • In Luke 17:33 Jesus says “Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.” I believe this is the reason that when we give our lives to Christ we are able to find new and eternal life in him. Whatever you are trying to hold on to today, give it to Christ and watch him work in you.
